What to Do (And Not Do) for Your Plumbing This Holiday Season

The holidays are a busy time in Mesquite. People gather together and have big feasts. Because the winter weather can get cold in this part of Texas, many people spend more time indoors. Time indoors is excellent, but it can pose a problem for your plumbing if you’re not careful. Keep reading to learn what to do and what not to do if you want to avoid a plumbing problem.

Do Handle Problems Early. Don’t Take Your Time.

If you notice any issue with your plumbing, like if a drain doesn’t work effectively or there’s a small leak, have it taken care of sooner rather than later. These types of problems don’t fix themselves. Worse, if you don’t do anything, there could be a much more significant situation during your holiday festivities.

A small problem could grow into water gushing out of a pipe, water backing up, or no water in certain areas of the home. At Metroplex Leak & Line, we have tools to check for leaks where you usually cannot see, and we can fix problems before they get worse.

Do Be Cautious with Your Garbage Disposal. Don’t Pour Grease or Chunks of Food Down the Drain.

After cooking a big meal, you may have a lot of food scraps to deal with. You may also have oily and greasy pots and pans to clean up. Please throw large chunks of food in the trash can instead of the sink. Do the same for oil or leftover fat that may have accumulated. Your garbage disposal cannot handle large items, sticky substances, or challenging pieces of food. Your drain can easily get clogged when oils and fats thicken. We’re just a phone call away if you need to clear a kitchen sink.

Do Be Careful in the Bathroom. Don’t Treat Your Toilet Like a Trash Can

The bathroom is another area where you must be mindful of common plumbing problems. First, make sure only toilet paper and waste go in the toilet. Feminine products, paper towels, and wipes should all go in the trash can. Restricting what is flushed prevents your toilet from clogging, which would be a major disaster if you had a lot of people over during a holiday gathering.

For the shower, consider getting a screen to prevent hair from collecting in the drain. It’s never fun for people to deal with slowly draining showers.

Remember these plumbing tips to help your holidays go off without a hitch. Then, call us at Metroplex Leak & Line if you ever run into issues.
