Why Is My Water Pressure Dropping?

One of many homeowners biggest complaints about their plumbing is that the water pressure seems to have dropped. In most cases the drop is significant enough to be noticed when filling a large pot for cooking, filling the bathtub, or even when showering. And the mistake that most homeowners make is deciding to just deal with the lower water pressure, thinking that it must be due to new construction in the area or something else that is not fixable. However, a call to your professional plumber can often yield very good results that will restore your water pressure.

Isolated Pressure Issues In Your Home

If you are finding that you only have an issue with the water pressure in the kitchen or in a single shower, the fix is normally very simple. It is almost certain that the fixture and valve assembly is the issue. When valves age, they tend to begin to fail before they completely fail. This means that the water might drip constantly if the valve is not closing completely, but it can also mean that the valve will not open completely. So the faulty valve is the cause of your low water pressure. Replacing the fixture will correct this issue.

Low-Pressure Issues Throughout Your Home

There are several issues that can cause low pressure throughout your home. The first issue only occurs if you live in an area that normally provides very high pressure from the city supply. In these cases, the home builder installs a pressure regulator where the water supply enters your home. This device can be adjusted to reduce the water pressure so as not to damage your homes plumbing pipes, appliances, or fixtures using water. When the valve inside the pressure regulating assembly begins to fail, it can be the same result as when a faucet valve begins to fail. You will notice that the water pressure is low throughout your home. Your plumber can test the pressure regulator to determine if this is the issue. If the pressure regulator is failing, then it can be replaced to remedy your low water pressure.

If you have an older home with galvanized steel pipes, the issue could be corrosion that is restricting the water flow in your home. This is a problem that develops over decades, so you would only notice a gradual reduction in water pressure, not a sudden and drastic change. In most cases, the solution is to replace the corroded pipes with copper tubing or even PEX tubing, but this is an expensive undertaking. Your plumber might also suggest using a hydro-jet to attempt to remove the years of corrosion and build up if the piping is still in decent condition.

Leak Detection

Finally, one of the most undesirable causes of a sudden decrease in water pressure is a leak somewhere. If you have not noticed any puddles on the floor or moist areas on a wall or ceiling, then the leak is well concealed somewhere in your yard or inside your home. A professional plumber will be able to use the latest leak detection technology to pinpoint the leak and make the repair for you. In most cases, even a leak that is in a wall, ceiling, or under a slab foundation can be located using audio amplification equipment. But the key to the success of this leak detection method is an experienced plumber who knows how to use the equipment and what to listen for. Remember, even though a pro costs a little e bit more, there will be far less destruction to your home and a quality repair when the work is performed by a licensed, insured and bonded professional plumber.
